Moxibustion is a type of external heat therapy also called ‘moxa’ for short. It is beneficial in certain cases of the common cold, digestive complaints, menstrual conditions and fertility treatments. Moxibustion is also well known for its ability to stimulate a breech baby to turn. According to various studies its success rate is 69-85%!
The material used to apply the heat is a funny sounding herb call Mugwort. This herb generates a heat sensation when rolled, compressed and burnt. It is then used to warm specific areas of the body or acupuncture points.
Moxa has a history of use throughout Asia for over 2,000 years and is usually applied along with acupuncture. The patient experience is a pleasant heating sensation that penetrates deep into the skin.
Two mechanisms generate the benefits of moxibustion. First, it creates a therapeutic level of heat that helps increase blood circulation and promotes the ability of the body to heal itself.
Second, it enhances activity of our bodies defense mechanism in response to the local inflammation. It does this by producing immunological responses, including increased lymphocyte numbers. This aids in the restoration of immune functions.
