Many of us are under daily stress from any number of different sources, be it work issues, family troubles or world problems. For each of us, stress can take its form differently, manifesting itself physically, mentally or emotionally. Whatever the form, it can cause us discomfort, anger, anxiety, and can eventually lead to illness. Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to reduce stress in your life.
This leads to the question, “Exactly how do I reduce the stress in my life?”. Most of us lead busy lives, so it can be hard to find time to start something new, even if it leads to stress reduction. Fortunately, there is a simple method you can use to start reducing your stress, and it only takes 15 minutes – a daily quiet time.
Take these steps to reduce stress in your life:
Choose a time of day. Morning is nice, but not essential. If you miss a day, fine, just start up again the next day – no blame.
Choose a space. A relatively quiet space is nice. It needs to have a place where you can sit, a chair is fine.
Intention. Remember your goal of stress reduction.
Sit in a straight-backed position, with your hands resting comfortably on your knees or lap. Close your eyes.
Relax deeply. Breathing through your nose, consciously relax each part of your body from your scalp to your toes. Take your time.
After relaxing your body, place your attention on your breath as it enters and leaves the nostrils. Stay with your breath for the rest of your relaxation time. Your mind may wander off to its usual places, just note when this happens, and gently lead your attention back to your breath.
That’s all there is to it! Be easy on yourself and just take it one day at a time, and soon you’ll start noticing your daily stress level dropping and your sense of well-being increasing.
